The Naughty Gnome
In 1988, in support of a protest concerning a ban on the display of gnomes in a Hamburg housing estate, Jutta and Gunter Griebel created their ‘Knife in the Back’ and ‘Up you Jack’ and ‘Flasher’ gnomes. In the 1990’s they also began producing a range of rude and naughty gnomes including a gay gnome and the Tarzan gnome. All of these were a distinct departure from the appearance of the traditional garden gnome. While many of them were risqué, and some were certainly not suitable for display in a garden, they proved to be a great success among younger people who took them for their humourous rather than decorative value.
